As the legend goes, Buddha invited the animals to a large celebration and gave each animal its very own year to honor it. The rat was the first to arrive so he was given the first year. The rest of the animals were each assigned a year as they arrived, and this gives us the complete 12-year cycle on which Chinese astrology is based.
