As legend goes, Buddha invited the animals to a large celebration and gave each animal its very own year to honor it. The quick-witted and resourceful rat, pictured left, was the first to arrive so he was given the first year. The rest of the animals were each assigned a year as they arrived, and this gives us the complete 12-year cycle on which Chinese astrology is based.
