The General Characteristics of Libras
Librans can be very difficult to understand. You can watch them vacillate all day long trying to decide whether to wear a red shirt or a blue one. When you offer your opinion, they, of course, choose the exact opposite.
No doubt, the entire process of watching Libra make up his or her mind is a maddening one. So, why are Librans this way? To understand the general characteristics of Libras, it’s helpful to know a little bit about their symbol, the scales.
The scales, in fact, are the only inanimate object associated with a zodiac sign. This means that Libra rules a lot of the intangibles of life like those of beauty, and justice; things you "feel", but can’t necessarily put our finger on.
The Libran Mind
- A Sense of Fair Play
The concept of justice is very important to Libra. They can't quite reconcile to the fact that injustices are committed everyday in our world, and this truly drives them crazy. It doesn’t matter if the injustice is small, like dividing a chocolate bar in unequal halves, or a large one like drawing up an international peace treaty. Everything must be equal because Libra cannot stand the fact that someone might be "getting over" on someone else.

Even though Libra presents a very light-hearted and optimistic outlook on life, under that beautiful veneer beats the heart of a coolly calculating mind. Libra doesn’t mind telling you exactly what he or she is thinking.
To Libra, it is perfectly rational to oppose the death penalty in some cases, only to openly support it in others. After all, justice should be doled out accordingly…sometimes. It’s with this rational mind that the Libran mother will tell her children to eat their carrots, and then explain, quite charmingly, that if they don’t they may suffer the medical consequences.
It doesn’t occur to Libra that this explanation might frighten a small child. To Libra, those are the medical facts, and everyone, no matter how small, should be able to see the logical consequences of ignoring those facts.
The Personality
- Vacillating
Librans are well known for their ability to vacillate between two options, and this process of making up their mind can go on for quite some time. Much like a delicate scale taking its time to find the right balance, so too does Libra flutter this way and that, weighing both sides of an issue before finally reaching a decision. This weighing of options is inherent to Libra personalities; making snap decisions does not come easy for them. That’s left up to their opposite sign Aries).
- Always Right
Another Libran characteristic is that they always believe they are right. However, unlike Virgos who believe they are right simply because they say so, Libras feel they are right because they’ve carefully considered the situation, and their innate sense of justice "tells" them that they are right.
Are they always right? Probably not, but don’t bother arguing with them. Doing so will only send the pair of you into an exhausting conversation that goes around and around, until finally, exasperated, you give in. Another, more astrological reason for this is that Saturn, the planet of karma, retribution and time, is "exalted" in Libra. Remember John Lennon’s famous song, Instant Karma? That’s a true Libran.
Beauty and Love
- Beauty
Another one of the general characteristics of Librans is their concept and constant need of beauty, and the entire beautification process first begins with them. Whether a Libran male or female, these individuals take their time to make sure that they are freshly showered and appropriately coiffed.
From there, this beauty radiates outwards in almost concentric circles. For example, the bathroom must be soothing and spa-like, the bedroom should always have fresh flowers, the living room needs a new piece of art, etc.
Beauty to Libra is like oxygen to others; they need it because it helps them feel balanced. After all, the world is full of ugly injustices, and if Libra’s house is not beautiful, where is the balance to all that pettiness and greed?
- All You Need is Love
And speaking of John Lennon, another one of his songs, All You Need is Love, also harkens back to some the general characteristics of Librans; loving love. Librans crave the passion, intensity and sensual delights of the early stages of romance the way others need to meet their basic survival needs. Yes, it’s that important.
Without it Libra may look elsewhere to fulfill that need. Libra does not understand that love generally becomes more stable, comfortable and placid over time, and this is one of the main causes of why a Libran may stray.
Putting It All Together
In truth, to really understand the general characteristics of Libras is to just remember the scales of justice. No matter what Libra is deciding or doing, he or she is constantly weighing both sides of the argument. Eventually, Libra will come to a decision that he or she feels is fair to all.
