Asking a Question of Tarot
Before we turn to a list of free tarot spreads you can use to help you navigate any difficult situations you may be facing, let’s first look at the different types of questions you can ask. Selecting and refining a specific set of questions before you get started on your free spread is a great way to make more sense of the answer you’ll eventually receive.
Define the Question
Here’s a list of the different types of questions you can ask of free tarot card spreads:
- Yes/No questions: Contrary to popular belief, it is okay to ask a yes or no question of tarot, but there is a trick to it. Before you begin, you need to set a clear criteria for what constitutes a "yes" answer and which card will equal a “no”. Doing this beforehand insures that you’ll be able to make heads or tails of the card you receive.
- How and what questions: When you ask questions like “How can I?", or “What can I do?”, know that the tarot usually responds by producing a list of actions needed to be taken in order to reach a specific goal. Let’s say for instance that you ask “How can I move out of this state now?". In this example, your tarot spread may respond with the Tower card; a clear signal that you’ll need to turn everything upside down in order to reach your goal.
- When questions: Most professionals agree that “when” questions do a disservice to the querent. Let’s say that the cards indicate that an event will happen next week. Well, what are you supposed to do in the meantime, sit and wait? And what if the cards indicate that a certain event may never happen? Will you then change course and give up your pursuit?
- Open-ended questions: These are the best questions to ask if you have no specific question in mind, but still feel the need to have a reading. Some examples of open-ended questions are: “What should I know right now?” or, “What’s something important that I’m over looking?” Asking questions like these can help give you the direction you seek.
- Wisdom questions: Wisdom questions like, “Why does the tarot work?” are a great way to begin a causal dialog with the tarot and can be especially helpful if you’re just starting out.
Inside the Free Tarot Spreads
Now it’s time to take a look at exactly where you can find some free tarot spreads!
Llewellyn’s Web Tarot
This site is so easy to navigate, you’ll be eager to try it out. First, it’s not a “dark” site at all. The background page is white, and with the orange border, it looks very user friendly.
The first step in using this site is to select your deck. There are twelve different decks to choose from. After you pick your tarot deck, you’ll be prompted to select your spread. Some of the spreads offered include the Past, Present, Future spread, and the Celtic Cross spread.
Next, think of a question. Once your mind feels focused, click the button that says “Proceed”. You’ll immediately be greeted with large tarot cards that allow you to see the exquisite details of the images, and you’ll receive a full reading. Fantastic!
Façade
Façade is a very interesting site because besides tarot, you can investigate the runes, numerology and even the I Ching; all in one place! The only real difference between Façade and the Llewellyn’s site is that on Façade you can choose to either receive or not receive reversals and significators in the reading. This offers you a bit more control over the spread, and lends a slightly more personal touch to the experience.
Tarot Advisor
At Tarot Advisor, you’ll want to click the “Free Reading” tab located on the left hand corner of the webpage. Unfortunately, however, this site only offers you two options:
- Celtic Cross Spread: This is only offered for a general life direction reading on this site.
- Relationship Spread: This option is specially designed for readings on love and relationships.
If you have a question on any other topic, it is highly recommended that you visit the first two sites previously mentioned. They offer you a well-rounded view of the tarot, with plenty of different options. Overall, your time spent at both Llewellyn’s and Façade will probably provide you with a richer experience.

We don't actually read the cards for you. The best thing to do, if you want a reading is to see the links posted in this article. That will take you to a site where you can ask your question (for free) and receive an answer. Thanks for the question and good luck! Thanks for the post and good luck with the new baby!
