Simply stated, combined astrology merges the twelve western zodiac signs with the twelve Chinese zodiac animal signs and matches them to compatible signs of each zodiac. While it may sound complicated, the structure of both zodiacs are naturally compatible.

You can calculate which animal signs are most compatible without having to memorize tables or ranges of birth dates if you do the following:

• Draw a circle
• Divide the circle as though it were a pie into twelve equal pieces by drawing straight lines through the circle.
• Now assign directions to each line beginning with North at the top of the circle and working your way clockwise with the next point being assigned NNE.
  • N: North
  • NNE: North North East
  • ENE: East North East
  • E: East
  • ESE: East South East
  • SSE: South South East
  • S: South
  • SSW: South South West
  • WSW: West South West
  • W: West
  • WNW: West North West
  • NNW: North North West

Next you’ll need to assign each direction in your circle a zodiac animal. The chart below will help you with this step.

To complete this process, you’ll now draw thicker lines to form triangles of the three compatible signs. You’ll end up with four triads.

• Start with the rat and draw a line to the Dragon (ESE) and then to the Monkey (WSW)
• Move clockwise to the next animal, the Ox, and draw a line to the Snake (SSE) and then to the Rooster (W).
• You’ll continue around the circle until you’ve drawn four triangles.

This gives you a basis from which to work. These aren’t the only compatible signs. The ox and the rat are side by side within the circle and make a good match, but for the purpose of this method, the ox is not a part of the triad. Again, this is an easy way to work with combinations of three.

Western astrology also divides the signs into four sets.

• Water
• Air

While being paired with a like sign may be one of the ideal combinations, there are many other combinations that work well together. Just as Chinese animal signs have varying degrees of compatibility, so do the Western zodiac signs.
